Retired April 2008 from BellSouth/AT&T
I was diagnosed in 1999. At the time I was taking care of my husband who was very sick. He had an on the job accident in 1993 and had multiple surgeries for many years. In 1999 he had a stroke and became more dependent on me. I was working fulltime, changed hours to take him to many dr. appts. and found out I was diabetic within a short period of time. I didn't take diabetes seriously all those yrs. I chose to concentrate on my husband's health without regret.

I took 9 months off from work before he passed away to take care of him. I finally seeked help taking care of him 3 months before he died. I don't remember much the year after that, but in jan 2007 I got serious about my health. By then I had multiple health problems. I got a new doctor and have been struggling to get my diabetes under control. She's sending me to and endocrinologist soon.

This site is wonderful. It's nice to have a place to go and talk with others like me and not just doctors. Life does go on!

I'm not as dumb as I look

Woohoo! I finally learned how to download a photo to this site. I have been afraid I would dork up my computer and not be able to pay bills online or read emails. Now if I can only remember how I did it, I will post more. Take care all, Sandy

My Life

It's been a while since I updated my profile, so here goes. I went to an all day diabetes management class here in Atlanta at piedmont hospital. I should have gone when I was diagnosed in 1999, but didn't. It was very informative and fun. A endo, nurse and physical fitness expert talked to us. I learned alot about the enemy (carbs). I got my last A1C results from Feburary (8.5) YUCK. I've lost about 30 lbs. since then so I hope it's come down. This is a year long program. Every 3 months, we meet… Continue

The times they are a changing

I went for my 1st endocrinologist appt recently. He's keeping me on Glucophage (1000mg twice daily), Actos (15mg once daily) and Levemir (14 units every afternoon and increasing 2 units every other day as needed). They also enrolled me in a grocery shopping group that takes you to stores and teaches me healthy choices and meal planning. The office staff was great and gave me a new meter(Accu Check Aviva). I told them my fingers were getting so sore and I thought they would write me a script but… Continue

hi sandy,
i guess you could say i'm retired too. i just started receiving s.s.d. between the neuropathy in my feet and legs and the restless leg syndrome my kids say i look like a jack in the box. up one minute and down the next. i can't do a job if i can't stay still for 5 minutes.
i really do like the aviva meter. it takes less blood and gives you your results much faster. i had to stop using my advantage meter because it got old and was giving me false readings. i'm one of those type of people who hate change and unless it quits i refuse to give it up. make sure you check the dates on your aviva strips. they have expiration dates on them and you may need to use them or lose them. i didn't realize that until about 2 months ago when i read on here about it. i never thought to look. why would they need to have expiration dates? wow, i learn something new everyday.
i'm also slow on learning anything electronical. i swear that they invented this stuff just so the kids could show us up. not that i don't mind using it once i get the hang of it. i also remember how much my grandmother loved new gadgets. if it made life easier, especially in the kitchen, she would buy it. she would have loved dishwashers and computers and microwaves. she died just as they were coming out with microwaves. they were too expensive at the time for her to buy one. so if my gramma could roll with the flow then i guess i'll have to too. i can tell you that she would have loved this new age where you can take a picture and send it by computer to your family members and they can order what they want right there on the computer. i know i love it.
it's great knowing someone my own age and diabetes type. we'll have to exchange info and see just how close we are in this stuff.
i saw that you lost your husband, it must have been very hard on you. then to have to deal with the diabetes, wow, you must be one strong lady.
give me a shout anytime. if i haven't been dragged away by my daughter then i'm usually here.

Kyle Busch from Joe Gibbs Racing won! LOL To be honest I did nto get to watch it except for the last few laps, but I got the highlights.
Pesonaly I dont care if they are on a road course or going fast and turning left, if it's racing, I'll watch it! (Heck will even watch the smart animals run around in circles and over things LOL)

Hope your able to turn a bit more in a direction that helps your diabetes get a little more stable. Mine has been all over the place lately because I got so much goign on right now. Stress is playing a huge role on some of my opps BG's, but I get them back in line fairly quick some days.

I wish you well
