Mommy, there’s a monster under my bed!

We do not have any history of diabetes in our family; however, my son was diagnosed with it (Type 1) just five years ago at the age of 16. Five years is a long time but, not near enough time to learn or completely understand the disease. Every day for the rest of his life it will be a challenge for him to stay healthy. Diabetes will be with him forever unless a cure can be found. On top of his daily studies with college classes and the two jobs he has it is a full time job taking care of his he… Continue

I am a nurse which didn't help me
a whole lot at the time. I knew l just enough to get me into trouble and not enough to get me out! I had a pediatrician who was very supportive of me and had me call multiple times during the day & night. Rob was 1 in 2000 babies at that time with diabetes. It was fairly rare & he almost died before he was diagnosed. tough tough times, I am afraid! Guilt and more guilt and fear and more fear...depression....anger and more anger, but it was something I couldn't give in to as he depended on me for his life. I am so glad those times are over. I continue to worry about him...daily. He is a strong person and knows his body & his disease better than the doctors. Right now he is in North Carolina @ NASCAR races. His Dad & I divorced when he was 6 y/o. I am remarried and my husband is very supportive of me and him and is a good father to my son...even tho' he is all grown up. Life is good. diabetic complications are there...but he is dealing well with them and I admire him so much as he never gives in or gives up...just keeps on keeping on! He is on disability, but works 18-24 hours a week @ Sears. thanks for writing me back. I wish I would have had this TU Diabetes site when he was small! Larra M

I am so glad to hear he is doing better. It is hard as parents to see our kids hurt or sad.
We are doing good. Thanks for asking. My daughter is getting ready to graduate high school in a couple of weeks. Bitter sweet time in her life. All of her good friends are going away to different schools. Thank goodness for cellphones and computers---they will be abe to stay in touch. Have a great day!

Hi, my name is Larrra. I sent you a message back to your note on teh first page of teh Children with Diabetes page...but not sure you got it or read it. I am very unfamiliar with this TU diabetes site & how it works. My son was diagnosed @ 15 month of age adn is now 38 years old. I too understand the fears & the guilt associated with having a diabetic child. We do have diabetes in both sides of our family. It is hard to NOT blame yourself for the disease. It is hard to shove that "monster" back under the bed because the monster keeps making itself apparent and scary! I do hope yougo to the first page of the Children with diabetes site and ready my letter to you. I am sorry for not understanding this web site better. I do not have a picture on my site yet. My son is going to help me putone on. I am very illiterate with blogs & web pages. :-) my son has a page...he is Robert adn he loves Tony Stewart/NASCAR...look forhis page. It is about Diabetic coomplications. Larra

Hi! I was diagnosed at 25 and it was certainly hard for the family to wrap their head around it. It can be scary and my parents took it hard. I spent a lot of time learning about it and educating others. I have learned and proven to my family it is a disease that you can lead a very normal, healthy life- with hard work. And your son sounds like a hard worker! 13 years later my family is very proud of me. But moms will always worry. Now I'm a mom - so I know how it feels.
