My pump holder

Just wanted to share with you my favorite pump holder. It's an Case Logic MP3 player case. I usually clip it to my belt loop, but there is also a strap that you could use (or make one). I like it cause it covers the pump and protects is well, but it is easy to slide off and use the pump as well! Just thought that I would share in case anyone is looking for a new pump holder. It should be available at electronics stores or anywhere where you can buy an MP3 player. I know that it is available both… Continue

We all have bad days...

... I just wanted to post because today was a horrible blood sugar day. So often we are tempted to show our good, "well-controlled" diabetes side. So I decided to share my numbers with you... so that if you have a bad day, you will know that you are not alone. I should add this is one of those bad days that I can completely blame on myself and poor decisions and bad management. All I have to say is, I hope that tomorrow will be a better day! Starting from midnight last night: 12:29am- 63 mg/d… Continue

6.5!!!!

For almost 5 years, I've been trying to get my A1c under 7. It finally happened! I must say that this is in large part due to ideas and support from this community!!! So THANK YOU!!!! I can say that the single biggest change that I made was bolusing 20-30 minutes before eating. Fast-acting insulin is not immediate acting insulin! ;)

Intro

I am currently living in Budapest, Hungary and working on my phd in political science (comparing the effects of welfares states on poverty in Centeral and Eastern Europe). I am originally from the Detroit area, but my husband is from Hungary. I have type 1 diabetes, diagnosed in 2003 (at the age of 21). I use the Cozmo 1800 insulin pump. After a few years with an A1c between 7.2 and 8.2, and I've recently improved my control (mostly thanks to this community!!) and seen my first A1c under 7. Pregnancy is something that we would like to consider in the near future... so actually under 6 is the goal, but one step at a time! Glad to have found this community!

I do, Diabetes.

Dear Diabetes- a letter to my diabetes on our 5th anniversary

Dear Diabetes, So today is the 5 year mark in our journey together. We sure have had some ups and downs. On our special day today, I wanted to treat you really well. So I woke up with a great fasting blood sugar and ate an almost no carb breakfast (though it wasn’t all that tasty)– I [...]

Follow your instincts AND check again!

At 3:21am, I woke up covered in sweat. The feeling was familiar; my blood sugar was low. I reached for my meter to confirm what I already knew. Yep, 48 mg/dl.. But my immediate thought was: I could have prevented this late night low… if I had followed my instincts. Last night included an evening run, where [...]

“Your pancreas works, but OURS don’t” or Diabetes is much easier when you are not alone

During college, I babysat for a family with one child who has type 1 diabetes and one child who does not. Immediately I saw how excited the child with diabetes was to be with someone else like him, someone who had to do all the shots and finger pokes and carb counting. When he first [...]

Closing the loop…

We went to visit some friends this weekend and one of them was surprised to see me poking my finger to check my blood sugar. He said that he figured that those days were over now that I was on the pump. It’s a common misconception– that that device that I wear attached to me 24 [...]

The deal between me and my diabetes

In the months before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I had applied for a scholarship that would fund a year of graduate studies abroad through Rotary International. With one year of college to go, I had my eyes, heart and mind set on returning to Hungary (a place that I had grown to love) after [...]

Hi Kristin,
I was leaving a comment on Shannon’s page and noticed that you are experimenting with extended boluses. I would really like to follow how things are going with you. I use an extended bolus very often and am very interested in seeing if the same things that work for me, work for other people. I know we’re all different and it must be somewhat dependent on our individual metabolism rates…right? Maybe if we discover anything, we can get people more involved in the pattern management group. Btw…regarding Chinese food…I have a really hard time with this one too. Whenever I eat out….even if I think it’s pretty healthy…I add an extra %25 to my carb calculations to cover the fact that the food is more processed than what I cook at home. I haven’t tried Chinese food since I started doing that but would probably add and extra %30 if I did. What do they put in that stuff :) !

Good Morning Kristin! You are a beautiful young lady. Love the wedding photos. Good luck with starting a family. One of my niece's had her 1st baby on July 2 here in Georgia. I have to say she's perfect and beautiful just like her Great Aunt Sandy(lol). Most of my family lives out of town and I don't get to see them often. Now that I'm retired and getting control of my diabetes, I plan to start traveling here in the USA first. Some day I'll go abroad. Sounds like you have a very interesting life. Thanks for being my friend.

With Love,

Sandy
